What is BaZi? Why Can It Decode Your Life?
BaZi, also known as Four Pillars of Destiny, is the core system of traditional Chinese astrology. Based on a person's birth year, month, day, and hour, it generates four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches (eight characters total), analyzing the Five Elements relationships between these stems and branches to infer personality traits, life opportunities, career development, marriage and family, and other aspects.
The core philosophy of BaZi is "unity of heaven and humanity": the state of Five Elements energy in the universe at the moment of birth influences a person's innate gifts. This is not fatalism, but a framework for understanding yourself and your destiny. BaZi tells you "what your innate conditions are" and "where your strengths and challenges lie," not "what you are destined to become." Understanding BaZi allows you to better go with the flow and make choices that suit you best at crucial moments.
The Four Pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars
Each pillar represents a different aspect of life
Year Pillar: Ancestral Heritage and Foundation
The Year Pillar represents ancestors, family background, and early environment (ages 1-16). The Heavenly Stem is called the "Year Stem," and the Earthly Branch is called the "Year Branch." The strength of the Year Pillar's Five Elements reflects whether one's foundation is solid.
The Year Pillar also represents relationships with elders and superiors, as well as the influence of the broader social environment.
Month Pillar: Career and Structure
The Month Pillar represents parents, youth period (ages 17-32), and career development. The Month Branch is key to determining the Day Master's strength and is called the "Seasonal Command." The Month Pillar's structure often determines the height of one's career.
The Month Pillar also represents one's social image, work environment, and professional development.
Day Pillar: Self and Spouse
The Day Pillar is the core of BaZi. The Day Stem represents the "Day Master" (yourself), and the Day Branch represents the Spouse Palace. The Day Pillar reflects one's core personality, marital status, and middle-age fortune (ages 33-48).
The strength of the Day Master is the foundation of BaZi analysis and determines the selection of favorable elements.
Hour Pillar: Children and Late Fortune
The Hour Pillar represents children, late-life fortune (after age 49), and career achievements. The Hour Pillar also reflects one's inner world, hidden thoughts, and ultimate life destination.
The Hour Pillar is called the "Fruit Palace," representing the results of life's efforts.
Five Elements: The Generating and Controlling Relationships of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth
The Five Elements are the fundamental language of BaZi analysis. The Five Elements include Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth, with generating and controlling relationships between them. Generating cycle: Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood. Controlling cycle: Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood.
In BaZi, each Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch corresponds to a Five Elements attribute. Heavenly Stem elements: Jia and Yi are Wood, Bing and Ding are Fire, Wu and Ji are Earth, Geng and Xin are Metal, Ren and Gui are Water. Earthly Branch elements: Yin and Mao are Wood, Si and Wu are Fire, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are Earth, Shen and You are Metal, Hai and Zi are Water. When analyzing BaZi, examine the strength, generating and controlling relationships, and flow of the Five Elements to determine the Day Master's strength and favorable elements.
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches: The Basic Symbols of BaZi
Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches
Ten Heavenly Stems
Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. Jia and Yi belong to Wood (Jia is Yang, Yi is Yin), Bing and Ding belong to Fire, Wu and Ji belong to Earth, Geng and Xin belong to Metal, Ren and Gui belong to Water. Heavenly Stems represent external expression and active energy.
Combination relationships between Heavenly Stems: Jia and Ji combine to form Earth, Yi and Geng combine to form Metal, Bing and Xin combine to form Water, Ding and Ren combine to form Wood, Wu and Gui combine to form Fire.
Twelve Earthly Branches
Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. Earthly Branches correspond to the twelve Chinese zodiac animals and twelve months. Earthly Branches represent internal environment, passive energy, and actual life situations.
The Six Combinations, Three Harmonies, Six Clashes, and Three Punishments between Earthly Branches are key points in BaZi analysis.
Stem-Branch Combinations
One Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch form a pillar, with sixty possible combinations (Sixty Jia Zi cycle). Year, month, day, and hour each have a pillar, totaling four pillars and eight characters. Stem-Branch combinations reveal the state of Heavenly Stems within Earthly Branches (such as Birth, Emperor, Tomb, etc.).
Yin-Yang attributes of Stem-Branch: Yang Stem pairs with Yang Branch, Yin Stem pairs with Yin Branch.
Ten Gods: Your Relationship with the World
The Ten Gods is a system in BaZi that describes interpersonal relationships and attributes of things. Centered on the Day Master, the Five Elements relationships between other stems and branches form the Ten Gods: Friend (Bi Jian), Rob Wealth (Jie Cai), Eating God (Shi Shen), Hurting Officer (Shang Guan), Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai), Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai), Direct Officer (Zheng Guan), Seven Killings (Qi Sha), Direct Resource (Zheng Yin), and Indirect Resource (Pian Yin).
The Ten Gods can be divided into five groups: Same Element (Friend, Rob Wealth) represents peers, competition, and cooperation; What I Generate (Eating God, Hurting Officer) represents talent, expression, and children; What I Control (Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth) represents wealth, spouse, and material things; What Controls Me (Direct Officer, Seven Killings) represents career, authority, and pressure; What Generates Me (Direct Resource, Indirect Resource) represents education, benefactors, and protection. By analyzing the distribution of Ten Gods in the birth chart, you can understand characteristics in career, wealth, marriage, and interpersonal relationships.
Major Luck Periods and Annual Luck: The Ups and Downs of Fortune
Major Luck Periods (Da Yun) are ten-year cycles of fortune, calculated starting from the Month Pillar. Major Luck Periods determine the main direction of fortune during a ten-year period. Annual Luck (Liu Nian) is the fortune of each year, determined by the year's Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. Major Luck Periods and Annual Luck interact with the original birth chart to produce favorable and unfavorable changes.
Principles for analyzing Major Luck Periods and Annual Luck: First, check whether the Five Elements of the Major Luck Period are favorable elements for the birth chart, then see if the Annual Luck coordinates with the Major Luck Period. If both Major Luck Period and Annual Luck are favorable elements, that decade or year will usually be smooth; if they are unfavorable elements, challenges may arise. However, specific outcomes depend on the clash, combination, harm, and punishment relationships between Major Luck Periods, Annual Luck, and the birth chart.
How to Start Learning BaZi
Step 1: Cast your BaZi chart. You need accurate birth time (Gregorian or Lunar calendar). You can use our BaZi tool to automatically generate the chart. After casting, you'll see the stems and branches of the four pillars, Five Elements distribution, Ten Gods configuration, and other information.
Step 2: Determine the Day Master's strength. The Day Master is the core of BaZi analysis, and its strength determines the favorable elements. To determine Day Master strength, examine: the Day Master's state in the Month Branch (seasonal command), whether it has roots in Earthly Branches, whether it has support from Heavenly Stems, and whether it receives support from Resource stars.
Step 3: Identify favorable elements. Favorable elements are the Five Elements that benefit the Day Master. If the Day Master is weak, favor Resource and Friend stars (support); if the Day Master is strong, favor Wealth, Officer, and Output stars (control, drain, consume). Favorable elements are important basis for analyzing fortune and choosing directions.
Step 4: Analyze Ten Gods configuration. See which Ten Gods are strong and which are missing in the birth chart to understand your areas of strength and aspects that need development.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to Common Questions About BaZi Astrology
Is BaZi superstition? Is there scientific basis?
BaZi is part of traditional Chinese culture, based on ancient astronomy and philosophical thought. It's a tool for understanding yourself and your destiny. From a modern perspective, BaZi can be understood as a "personality analysis system" that describes human traits and life patterns through symbolic language. Whether to believe is a personal choice, but using it as a reference for self-awareness has value.
How precise does birth time need to be for BaZi?
BaZi analysis requires accurate birth time, ideally precise to the hour. Because the Hour Pillar represents children and late fortune, different hours result in completely different Hour Pillars. If uncertain about birth time, first check parents' memory or birth certificate, or work backward through known major life events.
Can BaZi predict the future?
BaZi reveals "innate conditions" and "fortune cycles," not specific "future events." It tells you "in what time and what area opportunities or challenges may arise," not "what will happen." Destiny remains in your hands; BaZi just provides reference.
What's the difference between BaZi and Human Design?
Both BaZi and Human Design use birth information but from different angles. BaZi originates from traditional Chinese astrology, focusing on destiny trajectory, fortune fluctuations, career and wealth. Human Design originates from Western systems, focusing on energy type, decision-making style, and gift channels. The two can complement each other, helping you understand yourself from different perspectives.
What is "good destiny"? What is "bad destiny"?
There's no absolute "good" or "bad" destiny in BaZi. So-called "good destiny" usually means balanced Five Elements, powerful favorable elements, and supportive Major Luck Periods; "bad destiny" may mean unbalanced Five Elements, unfavorable elements dominating, and unhelpful Major Luck Periods. But bad destiny doesn't mean a bad life. After understanding your birth chart, you can avoid misfortune and play to your strengths.
