BaZi Beginner's Guide: Fundamentals of Four Pillars Astrology

BaZi, also known as Four Pillars of Destiny, is the core system of traditional Chinese astrology. Based on a person's birth year, month, day, and hour, it generates four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches (eight characters total), analyzing the Five Elements relationships between these stems and branches to infer personality traits, life opportunities, career development, marriage and family, and other aspects.

The core philosophy of BaZi is "unity of heaven and humanity": the state of Five Elements energy in the universe at the moment of birth influences a person's innate gifts. This is not fatalism, but a framework for understanding yourself and your destiny. BaZi tells you "what your innate conditions are" and "where your strengths and challenges lie," not "what you are destined to become." Understanding BaZi allows you to better go with the flow and make choices that suit you best at crucial moments.

The Five Elements are the fundamental language of BaZi analysis. The Five Elements include Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth, with generating and controlling relationships between them. Generating cycle: Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood. Controlling cycle: Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood.

In BaZi, each Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch corresponds to a Five Elements attribute. Heavenly Stem elements: Jia and Yi are Wood, Bing and Ding are Fire, Wu and Ji are Earth, Geng and Xin are Metal, Ren and Gui are Water. Earthly Branch elements: Yin and Mao are Wood, Si and Wu are Fire, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are Earth, Shen and You are Metal, Hai and Zi are Water. When analyzing BaZi, examine the strength, generating and controlling relationships, and flow of the Five Elements to determine the Day Master's strength and favorable elements.

The Ten Gods is a system in BaZi that describes interpersonal relationships and attributes of things. Centered on the Day Master, the Five Elements relationships between other stems and branches form the Ten Gods: Friend (Bi Jian), Rob Wealth (Jie Cai), Eating God (Shi Shen), Hurting Officer (Shang Guan), Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai), Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai), Direct Officer (Zheng Guan), Seven Killings (Qi Sha), Direct Resource (Zheng Yin), and Indirect Resource (Pian Yin).

The Ten Gods can be divided into five groups: Same Element (Friend, Rob Wealth) represents peers, competition, and cooperation; What I Generate (Eating God, Hurting Officer) represents talent, expression, and children; What I Control (Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth) represents wealth, spouse, and material things; What Controls Me (Direct Officer, Seven Killings) represents career, authority, and pressure; What Generates Me (Direct Resource, Indirect Resource) represents education, benefactors, and protection. By analyzing the distribution of Ten Gods in the birth chart, you can understand characteristics in career, wealth, marriage, and interpersonal relationships.

Major Luck Periods (Da Yun) are ten-year cycles of fortune, calculated starting from the Month Pillar. Major Luck Periods determine the main direction of fortune during a ten-year period. Annual Luck (Liu Nian) is the fortune of each year, determined by the year's Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. Major Luck Periods and Annual Luck interact with the original birth chart to produce favorable and unfavorable changes.

Principles for analyzing Major Luck Periods and Annual Luck: First, check whether the Five Elements of the Major Luck Period are favorable elements for the birth chart, then see if the Annual Luck coordinates with the Major Luck Period. If both Major Luck Period and Annual Luck are favorable elements, that decade or year will usually be smooth; if they are unfavorable elements, challenges may arise. However, specific outcomes depend on the clash, combination, harm, and punishment relationships between Major Luck Periods, Annual Luck, and the birth chart.

Step 1: Cast your BaZi chart. You need accurate birth time (Gregorian or Lunar calendar). You can use our BaZi tool to automatically generate the chart. After casting, you'll see the stems and branches of the four pillars, Five Elements distribution, Ten Gods configuration, and other information.

Step 2: Determine the Day Master's strength. The Day Master is the core of BaZi analysis, and its strength determines the favorable elements. To determine Day Master strength, examine: the Day Master's state in the Month Branch (seasonal command), whether it has roots in Earthly Branches, whether it has support from Heavenly Stems, and whether it receives support from Resource stars.

Step 3: Identify favorable elements. Favorable elements are the Five Elements that benefit the Day Master. If the Day Master is weak, favor Resource and Friend stars (support); if the Day Master is strong, favor Wealth, Officer, and Output stars (control, drain, consume). Favorable elements are important basis for analyzing fortune and choosing directions.

Step 4: Analyze Ten Gods configuration. See which Ten Gods are strong and which are missing in the birth chart to understand your areas of strength and aspects that need development.
